New Faculty Orientation Overview

All new faculty are invited and encouraged to participate in the New Faculty Orientation program. The program consists of

  1. An online course, through D2L, that educates faculty on ECC’s mission and values, academic policies, and student and faculty resources. The course also provides faculty with practical teaching resources, such as concise research on student learning and development, lesson planning templates, and techniques for classroom discussion and assessment. All new faculty are asked to complete the online course prior to the in-person New Faculty Orientation seminars.
  2. A half-day in-person New Faculty Orientation seminar for part-time faculty that introduces new faculty to varied student support offices, provides an overview of our student population (demographics, academic performance, and reported barriers to success), connects new faculty with their deans, and details strategies for the first week of teaching.
  3. A two-day in-person New Faculty Orientation seminar for full-time faculty that introduces new faculty to varied student support offices, connects new faculty with their deans, delves into the tenure and evaluation process, and details strategies for the first week of teaching.
  4. A two-semester New Faculty Orientation series for full-time faculty. The monthly meetings feature a discussion among the new faculty of their teaching and professional experience and encourage the faculty to put forth any questions that have come up. The check-in is followed by a two-hour workshop on teaching practices related to student and faculty development. Workshop topics include Student Engagement, Assessment and Feedback, Creating an Inclusive Environment, Universal Design for Learning, Culturally Responsive Teaching, and Instructional Design.
